چکیده

We describe the general characteristics and interactions happening at a unique, potential new Mars analogue site, located in Altiplano Atacama Desert region: Ojos del Salado inactive volcano. The interaction between rare snowing events strong winds transported large masses of porous volcanic grains there could produce decimeter - meter thick buried snow fast, shielded against sublimation for extended periods (years). Subsurface temperature logging suggests that water ice melting is surface modification dominated by desiccation cryosphere wind activity – just like on Mars. first analysis aeolian area points to immature material sized coarse sand silt, indicates possibility larger occurrence winter when site inaccessible however further observations are necessary contains decameter scale megaripples, which unusual Earth also support understanding resemble features shallow subsurface with relevance supported here drilled cores evaporitic sediments presented carbonate, aragonite, anhydrite, talc clay minerals relevance. Though region generally felsic composition, basalts can be found hillside near Laguna Verde where effect extreme conditions (including UV radiation) rock weathering analysed. temperature, dryness, exposure, decreased atmospheric pressure elevated radiation together make unique it accessible up 5200 m altitude regular pick-up trucks via 5–6 h driving from Copiapo airport. • A described. Organic amine biomarker detection in the Yungay region of the Atacama Desert with the Urey instrument

[1] The Urey in situ organic compound analysis instrument, consisting of a subcritical water extractor (SCWE) and a portable microchip capillary electrophoresis instrument called the Mars Organic Analyzer (MOA), was field tested in the Atacama Desert, Chile, in June 2005. Soil samples from the most arid Yungay region were collected, biomarkers were extracted by the SCWE, and organic amine compo...

The climate of the coast and fog zone in the Tarapacá Region, Atacama Desert, Chile

In the Atacama Desert, the narrow littoral plain and the adjacent mountain range have a unique climate. This area is locally called the “coastal desert with abundant cloudiness”, and extends from the coastline up to an elevation of 1000 m. The climate is designated as being BWn according to Köppen's Climate Classification as adapted for Chile. In the original classification the acronym (Bn) is ...

The Mawrth Vallis region of Mars: A potential landing site for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission.

The primary objective of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, which will launch in 2011, is to characterize the habitability of a site on Mars through detailed analyses of the composition and geological context of surface materials. Within the framework of established mission goals, we have evaluated the value of a possible landing site in the Mawrth Vallis region of Mars that is targe...
